Featured Connection

OHIOCARES

Brain Injury Association of Ohio (BIAOH) is pleased to be a member of OHIOCARES, a group created by Major General Wayt of the Ohio National Guard to respond to the needs of returning soldiers and their families.

OHIOCARES is a collaboration of state and local agencies supporting the behavioral health of returning OIF/OEF (Operation Iraqi Freedom / Operation Enduring Freedom) veterans and their families. Although the VA is the primary source of services for veterans, this partnership provides community based alternatives to veterans and their families.

OHIOCARES' purpose is to enhance the “safety net” community of behavioral health services available for military personnel and their families and to complement the services available through the Department of Veterans Affairs and Vet Centers by linkages with county alcohol, drug and mental health boards and behavioral health care providers, as well as advocacy and support organizations such as BIAOH.

Service Member, Family and Community Behavioral Health Resource Guide is provided to assist military service members, veterans, their families and community-based agencies with the service member’s behavioral health needs during the transition from active duty back to civilian life.

CALL TO ACTION!

Date: Friday, June 26, 2009

To: Advocates for Ohio's Children & Adults with Brain Injury

From: Suzanne Minnich, Executive Director, Jon Fishpaw, President

Re: Action Alert - Urgent , Immediate Need to contact Conferees,
State Senators & Reps regarding State Budget Bill

Advocates  - It's urgent that you contact Conference Committee Conferees and your own State Senators & Representatives NOW.  As you know, they, along with the Governor, are working to fill a 3.2 Billion dollar deficit and pass the State Budget Bill by June 30, 2009.

Conference Committee Members must work in a bi-partisan way to reach compromises on ways to identify additional sources of revenue or go forward with disastrous cuts to vital services for vulnerable Ohioans, including children and adults with brain injury.  Without additional revenue, an additional 30% cut to funding for people with brain injury (on top of an earlier 15% cut) is expected.

Ask Conferees, your own state senators and representatives to come together in a bi-partisan way to demonstrate the necessary political courage to resolve the State Budget Bill crisis in a way that protects Ohioans at greatest risk.  Gap-filling proposals include restoration of earlier tax breaks to high-income individuals, slot machines at race tracks, etc.

Let them know that failure to do so will result in dismantling the network and level of services advocates for Ohioans with brain injury put in place over a 20-year period, including the highly valued assistance provided through the Brain Injury Association of Ohio's Community Support Network offices.

What's the Message to Our Leaders?  Work together to fill the hole in Ohio's budget; pass a State Budget Bill preserving vital services to at risk populations, including those with Brain Injury.  As voters, we expect you to make the politically courageous  decisions required by these historically difficult times.

When to Contact them?  Immediately!  Conferees (see contact info below) are scheduled to meet over the weekend, and a vote on the State Budget Bill is tentatively scheduled for early next week.

How to Contact them?   Through phone calls, emails and faxes.  An email link to your own State Senator and Representative can be found on the website for the Ohio General Assembly
