Thanks to all who participated in the Brain Injury Association of Ohio's 24th Annual Conference, "Brain Injury: Operation Awareness," held in September.

The feedback we received, through evaluations and comments made during the conference, was overwhelmingly positive.  Our 24th annual conference was acclaimed by attendees as being of great educational, networking, and inspirational value.

Peak attendance reached 314 and was closely balanced between professionals and service providers (47%) and family members and individuals with disabilities (53%) mostly due to brain injury. Here are excerpts from participants' overall evaluations of the conference:

  • Outstanding! Best ever! Keynotes were excellent.
  • Compelling and enlightening
  • The range of classes (most useful part of the conference)
  • I learned a lot that I can apply to my job as a rehab professional
  • Enjoyed myself with a mixture of fun and education
  • You have outdone yourselves. It was like a family reunion!
  • Every year I have left with the feeling that I got something that has put me on the road of understanding my husband's injury, and something that helped with my own depression.

We hope that all of those who attended and presented will consider joining us for next year's conference, scheduled for September 28-29, 2006.  A special thanks goes to our exhibitors & sponsors, and scholarship contributors.  We could not have done it without your help and support!

Both of our Keynote speakers were wonderful:

  • On Thursday, Louis M. French, PsyD, Neuropsychologist, Chief, Clinical Services, The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (Walter Reed Army Medical Center) spoke on, "Traumatic Brain Injury in the Global War on Terrorism."
  • On Friday, Tina Mooney, MSW, talked about her struggle to accept the painful reality that life doesn’t always turn out the way we hoped it would, her efforts to build a life she’s happy with and the life lessons she learned along the way.  Her keynote was entitled, "Building a Life You Like, Even When It’s Not the Life You Wanted."

THANK YOU to all of our 2005 sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and attendees!  We hope you had a wonderful experience at the conference.  From what we heard, it was acclaimed, "The best conference yet!Read about the 2004 Conference.

Conference activities, September 29-30, 2005

The conference featured a keynote speaker each day, followed by four hour-long workshop periods offering as many as five concurrent sessions on wide-ranging topics. Thursday's keynote, Dr. Louis French, neuropsychologist and Chief of Clinical Services at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, spoke on "Traumatic Brain Injury in the Global War on Terrorism: The Walter Reed Experience." In fact, a complete track of workshops at the conference helped attendees explore the influx of military personnel returning from service with brain injury, its impact on the nation's consciousness, service and support systems, and the advocacy community. From Vietnam to Iraq, individuals who served our country related their battlefield experiences and the heroism required to face the challenges of living with brain injury.

On the theme of moving forward, Friday's keynote, Tina Mooney, MSW, will speak on "Building A Life You Like, Even When It's Not the Life You Wanted" offering insights and lessons learned from her own experiences and knowledge of challenges associated with "mild" traumatic brain injury. Workshops addressing government initiatives promoting "systems change" to improve individual choice and access to services and supports for individuals with disabilities (regardless of the cause) will be of special interest. This is particularly true in Ohio, since there is no dedicated "system" or state agency addressing the needs of individuals with TBI. Naturally, workshops on state-of-the-art research and interventions promoting optimal independence, day-to-day coping strategies, better understanding of TBI, and approaches to avoid common pit-falls also will factor into the equation to make Conference 2005 our best ever. Last, but certainly not least, attendees can count on a series of "lighter fare" workshops just for their fun and enjoyment.

Annual Membership Meeting:  Wednesday, September 28, 2005 from 4:30 - 6:00 PM at the Marriott.
