Snowflake Giving Campaign

for the Holidays

It’s snowing at the Brain Injury Association of Ohio’s State Office as friends and supporters respond to the Association’s holiday giving campaign!

Early in December, BIAOH members, support group attendees, and others within our advocacy community received a mailed invitation to join the campaign by returning a donation along with the “snowflake” enclosed in each card.  Participants were asked to add their own names to the snowflake, or the name of a special person they wished to recognize.

The inspiration behind BIAOH’s holiday giving campaign was a refrain from an Emily Warburton poem celebrating the wonder and uniqueness of each individual through a metaphoric comparison to the singular beauty and design of each snowflake.  To those within the advocacy community for children and adults with brain injury, it’s easy to relate this imagery to the unique needs of those who have experienced brain injury without losing sight of the “snowflake” qualities shared by all and as expressed in the poem:

We are each of us a snowflake

A falling star in flight

A traveler through the universe

In search of our own light

Unique in form and beauty

No two of one design

Transitory dancers

On the window pane of time

Image of snowflake with Gratitude at Work logo. The first snowflake BIAOH received bears the Gratitude at Work Foundation logo, and the signature of Matthew Garretson.  Garretson’s firm, specializing in structured settlements and related services, established the foundation for the purpose of “Advocating for the rights and treatment of individuals with profound injuries.”

Photo of Peggy O'Neill, Jon Fishpaw, Suzanne Minnich and Matthew Garretson.Since Nov. 29th when BIAOH representatives Peggy O’Neill (Community Support Network Coordinator based in Cincinnati), Jon Fishpaw (Board President), and Suzanne Minnich, (Executive Director) accepted the $2,500 Gratitude at Work donation from Matthew Garretson (see photo taken at the firm’s home office in Cincinnati), a flurry of snowflakes and contributions arrives each day with the mail.

Photo of Katrina and Diana Korb (volunteers) with snowflake covered door in background.“Each donation, large or small, results in adding a snowflake to the glass windows and door of  our office”, according to Michelle Corpron, BIAOH’s Administrative Assistant, who worked with volunteers to coordinate mailing the snowflake-themed holiday giving materials. (Shown, with snowflakes in the background are daughter-and-mother volunteers, Katrina and Diana Korb.)  “It’s fun to see both who is sending the snowflakes with their contributions, and the people they are honoring,” Corpron continues.  (See a listing of contributors and honorees, in the order gifts were received below.)  For example, on the front of one snowflake was a tribute to the memory of a 33 year old woman, and on the back was the notation, “Survived 18 productive years with brain injury.”

BIAOH’s “snowflake” giving campaign will run through the end of January 2008, so there’s still time to participate.   Consider making the gift of a BIAOH snowflake to a special person over this holiday season!  It may turn out to be their favorite gift, particularly since it supports the “help and hope” BIAOH offers through its programs and services throughout Ohio.
