Local BIAOH Chapters - The only chapters
currently operating are in Dayton and Youngstown. Over the past
few years, the Cleveland
and Cincinnati chapters have changed status to more of a support group,
which relieves them of the burden of maintaining their tax status and
managing their funds independently. Typically, chapters are separately incorporated, though
they share BIAOH's mission and that of its national organization. Each is designated by
the IRS as a tax-exempt organization and has its own federal identification number.
Chapters are governed by either a Board of Trustees or steering committee. Their
activities typically focus on support group development and maintenance, awareness,
prevention, social activities, fund raising and advocacy. For the most part, they operate
with volunteer power.
Support Groups - BIAOH maintains a list of support groups for people with brain
injury and/or their families that meet throughout the state. Groups vary in size, length
of time together, composition, focus, etc. Some are facilitated by human service or health
care professionals, and others by individuals who have experienced brain injury or by
family members. While some groups provide a confidential setting for participants to share
information about their experiences with brain injury and offer mutual support, others are
geared more toward social and recreational activities. BIAOH's State Office and CSN staff
can provide information and some assistance to those interested in starting new groups.
