BIAOH is a non-profit corporation guided by a
Board of Trustees which includes
substantial numbers of consumers, both individuals with brain injury and family members.
Volunteers represented on the Board, as well as those connected with a state-wide network
of over 5O support groups, work in collaboration with association staff (currently
9 FTEs)
to accomplish the organization's mission. Additionally, in the Cincinnati and
Dayton areas, chapters affiliated with BIAOH also provide services and supports, and work
to promote prevention.
BIAOH's closest partner is the Brain Injury Advisory Committee (BIAC),
formerly known as the Head Injury Advisory Council (HIAC),
housed within the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission. In 1990, BIAOH was successful
in advancing legislation to create the HIAC, which serves as the state-level planning and
coordinating body for Ohio's citizens with brain injury. Its members include
representatives from key state agencies (such as the Ohio Departments of Mental
Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, Health, and Mental Health), medical and
rehabilitation professionals, BIAOH, and individual consumer representatives. Since 1994,
BIAOH and BIAC have collaborated to develop and implement combined strategic plans. BIAOH
also strives to collaborate with other disability and prevention advocacy groups to
exchange information and advance common goals.
